For Vertical Plant Life project we got to build up two green walls at BC Naklo. The indoor and the outdoor living wall. We started first with the indoor because of the cold weather and we are going to start setting up the outer one in a few weeks.
The first thing we noticed when we came to te site was that when we were measuring the wall for back construction we forgot to check the material of all the back walls. So this "little" square extension of the wall was made out of plasterboard panels. We have only tried once to hang a green wall on plasterboard panels but it didn't work. The whole wall inside the office collapsed. So we decided to give it a try and we fixed the wooden back construction onto the galvanised profiles behind the plasterboard panels. We put the rest of the back construction up without any problem at all.
We are usually using PVC boards for indoor walls to make the original back wall away from water. Well, to make water away from the wall and it's working fine. We put our custom made gutter and aluminium frame where they are supposed to be and start with horizontal profiles for hanging the panels.
When the horizontal profiles are tight to the PVC board we need to put up the irrigations pipes and drippers. We usually need two sectors of 16 mm pipes for a wall of cca 3x5 m. That also mean that we are going to use two magnetic valves for the wall. Our profiles already have a place for pipes so we put them on and attach the drippers.
The wall is now ready for our Soft Shell panels. One of the quickest things is for sure hanging up the panels. That takes up around 10 minutes and the wall is done. The only thing that is missing are the growing media and plants.
We made a special 100% mineral substrate to use it in our green walls. At the beginning it is a little bit hard for the plants to start growing, but once their roots are grown in the substrate we can leave them without irrigation for 5-10 days. Tomaz came up with a pattern how to plant the plants and we plant them pretty fast. Everyone was super happy about their new studying equipment and so are we. Now the students can learn how to maintain green walls and how to grow their own food anywhere with the right conditions and the right knowledge.
Here are also some videos and timelapses on how we build up this green wall.
